With 1.2 billion people, India’s housing and transportation challenges are massive, and centered on affordability, security, and efficiency. Rapid development of cities and increase in transportation is exerting immense pressure on our countries economic and natural resources and public health. 65.5 million Indians, according to 2011 Census, live in urban slums, and several more are residing in congested accommodation. As high income individual are buying more private vehicle and use less public transport, which causes more traffic jams, which in turn decreases the efficiency of public transport. In many regions, public transport is not easily accessible, which make people use private vehicle. Public transport is less disabled friendly. There is also lack of infrastructure and poor maintenance of existing public transport infrastructure. Let us address these challenges that will help: (a) Ensure access for all to adequate, safe and affordable housing and basic services and upgrade slums, (b) Provide access to safe, affordable, accessible and sustainable transport systems for all, improving road safety, notably by expanding public transport, with special attention to the needs of those in vulnerable situations, women, children, persons with disabilities and older persons, (c) Create energy, time, and space efficient transportation options for all, and (d) Promote non-motorized modes of transportation, integrating land-use and transportation planning.
