Climate change is now disrupting lives, costing people, communities and countries dearly today and even more tomorrow. As India’s population and economy continue to grow, it becomes more urgent to find means to do it in an environmentally sustainable manner. 21% of communicable diseases in India are related to unsafe water: 97 million people don’t have access to improved water supplies. Distribution challenges; like leakages in transmission lines; significant proportion of nonrevenue and unaccounted flow of water, large number of non-functional and defective meters; lead to an estimated national loss of processed water of 1012 litres per year, equivalent to 500 million rupees. This accounts for 20-30% of average water supply in urban areas. Energy poverty is a critical issue since 77 million households in India still use kerosene for lighting. The problem is even more acute in rural India where up to 44 percent of households lack access to electricity. Let us address these challenges that will help: (a)Ensure universal access to affordable, reliable, and sustainable energy services for all, (b) Improve water quality by reducing pollution, eliminating dumping and minimizing release of hazardous chemicals and materials, and substantially increasing recycling and safe reuse globally, (c) Support and strengthen the participation of local communities in improving water and sanitation management, energy efficiency and environment conservation.
